Early life and education
Raised in a Jewish family in North London, Baron Cohen participated in the Zionist youth movement Habonim Dror and spent a gap year on an Israeli kibbutz . At Cambridge University, he joined the Footlights comedy troupe and wrote a thesis on Jewish involvement in the U.S. civil-rights movement . Early work as a model and TV host soon led him to experiment with satire and character-based comedy.
