The Captain of the boat is greatly responsible. You are more likely to be attacked in the open ocean jumping from a boat. Sharks follow boats, they associate boats with easy food and large boat especially make all sort of noises and vibrations in the water that attract shark and the further you go off shore, the larger the sharks, so it was a given. Sometimes you see the US navy personel jumping off an aircaft carrier in the middle of the ocean. It is downright stupid but when they do, there is always a zodiac with armed personel onboard. Of course it is not going to help you once the shark has zeroed in on you. The morale of the story is: never jump off the boat. Even when you have to go under water to clean or repair your hull, it is wise to wear a shark deterent.

I have a simple rule.
I no longer swim in anything other then swimming pools.

I have never been or ever will be, attacked by a shark, alligator, crocodile, snake, etc. on and on.

I do not get in the ocean to swim. I grew up around the Great Lakes and I don't swim in those either. If you are in the ocean, you are a menu item. Period. Great Lakes are fresh water oceans. You are far less buoyant in fresh water. Every Summer you can't count the drowning deaths in the Great Lakes because people do not check the weather before they head out. The way this young lady recounts her shark encounter, I think she lost her mind (I know I would!). By the way, sharks don't attack, they eat. Just like I ate a steak last night. I didn't attack it, I ate it.
